What is an alt account?

Guides

Published October 9, 2026.

An alt account is an additional account someone uses alongside their main account on a platform. “Alt” means alternative. It might be for a hobby, work, a smaller audience, or posting under another name. Having one does not by itself mean someone is cheating.

Alt, private, and fake accounts mean different things

An alt describes the account’s relationship to a main account. A private account restricts who can see content. An impersonation account pretends to be someone else. These categories can overlap, but you should not treat every secondary or private account as an impersonation.

Why someone might use a second account

People can separate professional and personal posts, follow a niche interest, or choose a different audience. A partner may not know every account you use. The relationship concern is whether an account is used to conceal conduct that violates a shared agreement, not simply whether a second account exists.

Ask about the behavior that matters

If you discovered an unfamiliar profile, check whether it actually belongs to your partner before raising it. You could ask, “Is this your account, and what do you use it for?” Discuss any specific boundary concern separately. A denial or a private profile is not a substitute for evidence about ownership or use.

What a username search can show

A username lookup can return public pages with matching or similar handles. That does not reveal all of a person’s alts or prove common ownership. CheatAlert’s public profile leads need source review, especially when the only connection is a familiar username or copied image.

Is an alt account the same as a burner account?

The terms can overlap. “Burner” often implies temporary or disposable use, while “alt” simply means another account. Neither label establishes why an account was created or how it is used.

Explore public profile search

If an online profile is part of your concern, a public lookup can provide leads to review. It cannot decide whether your partner is cheating or resolve relationship doubt.
