How does a username search work?

Guides

Published October 9, 2026.

A username search checks known handles against public profile addresses on supported platforms. It can produce useful leads when someone reuses a handle. The same spelling on two networks, however, does not prove that one person owns both accounts.

Start with the exact handle and platform

Copy the original handle rather than generating variations from someone’s name. Preserve meaningful punctuation and include the domain for services such as Bluesky and Mastodon. A platform’s display name and account handle are different fields.

Review each source separately

Compare each public page’s visible details and links. A page that links to another account provides more context than a matching handle alone, but links can also be outdated. Keep contradictory details and unavailable pages in the report.

Username searches in CheatAlert

CheatAlert accepts optional social usernames and checks supported public profile addresses. Pages may require sign-in or be unavailable. These checks do not reveal private accounts or verify identity solely from the reuse of a handle.

Does an empty result mean there is no account?

No. A public lookup can miss unindexed pages, different usernames, and pages that require sign-in. An empty result describes the checks performed, not every account a person may have.

A result is public profiles to review.
