How do you find a Mastodon profile?
Published October 9, 2026.
A Mastodon account is identified by both a username and a server, often written as @name@server.example. The same username can appear on different servers. You need the full account address or an original profile URL for a specific lookup.
Check the server as well as the name
Treat the server domain as part of the identity of the address. Searching a bare username may lead to another person’s account on another server. Use a complete address from a source you recognize before comparing photos or display names.
Moved accounts and unavailable servers
A profile can move or become inaccessible when a server is unavailable. Review any visible move notice on the original page. A failed fetch is not evidence that the person has stopped using Mastodon, and an old address may no longer be their current account.
Mastodon lookups in CheatAlert
CheatAlert accepts a Mastodon username, a full username and server, or a supported profile URL. A bare username defaults to mastodon.social, so supply the server to check another instance. Public access depends on that server. Results describe the address checked, not every account a person could have across the network.
Does an empty result mean there is no account?
No. A public lookup can miss unindexed pages, different usernames, and pages that require sign-in. An empty result describes the checks performed, not every account a person may have.
A result is public profiles to review.
